Pre-Season Screening

Concussion baseline screening

Pre-season baseline testing for athletes in collision, contact, and high-impact sports. The baseline gives a personal reference point if a concussion happens during the season.

A baseline screening is a snapshot of how your brain and balance perform when you are well, on file before the season starts. If you do sustain a concussion, the post-injury reassessment is then compared back to your own normal rather than to a population average, which makes return-to-play decisions clearer and more individualised.

Who benefits from baseline testing

Baseline screening is most useful for athletes in collision and contact sports, and for athletes with a history of concussion where future return-to-play decisions are likely to be more nuanced.

  • Rugby union and rugby league
  • Australian rules football
  • Soccer
  • Combat sports including boxing, MMA, judo, and BJJ
  • Equestrian and motorsport
  • Mountain biking, freestyle skiing, snowboarding
  • Athletes with a history of one or more previous concussions

Baseline screening is generally not recommended for non-collision sports unless there is a specific clinical reason.

What the screening includes

  • Detailed concussion history (previous concussions, recovery times, ongoing symptoms)
  • SCAT6 baseline, including symptom inventory, cognitive screening, and balance testing
  • Identification of modifiable risk factors (sleep, mood, prior migraine, learning differences)
  • A written record provided to you, your team, and your GP if you wish

For athletes with a relevant history, additional cognitive testing or onward referral may be recommended. The plan is built around your sport and history.

How the appointment runs

A baseline screening typically runs 30 to 45 minutes. Wear something you can move in. Avoid heavy training or alcohol the day before, since both can affect results.

You leave with a written summary of your baseline performance, an explanation of what the numbers mean, and clear guidance on what to do if a concussion happens during the season.

If you do sustain a concussion

Bring your baseline summary to the post-injury appointment. Reassessment uses the same tools, compared back to your personal numbers. The combined picture, baseline plus post-injury, makes return-to-play decisions more individualised. See the concussion management page for the broader recovery and return pathway.

Common questions

Does baseline testing prevent concussion?

No. It does not change your risk of concussion. It changes how accurately a future concussion can be assessed against your own normal.

How often should I redo it?

Generally every two years for adult athletes, and yearly for adolescents whose neurological development is still progressing. Repeat sooner if your circumstances change significantly.

Is baseline testing covered by Medicare?

The specialist consultation may attract a Medicare rebate where a valid GP referral is in place. Reception confirms costs at booking.

Can my whole team be screened together?

Group bookings for clubs and squads can be arranged. Contact reception to discuss logistics.
